“Et Ux” can show up in a preliminary title report. What does it mean?

Deeds or preliminary title reports are sometimes riddled with mystery language, such as the property description in metes and bounds. Other times a non-familiar phrase may slip in, such as “Et Ux” after a name, such as George Jones et ux

What is that, Greek, Latin, ancient English?  A typo, maybe? And what is it doing in your real estate related paperwork?

As it turns out, I did study Latin at Saratoga High School back in the 70s, and I even remember some of it.

Et ux is short for “Et uxor”, or “and wife”.

Et vir translates to and man, but means “and husband”.

Today we would normally see people named “Joe Jones and Mary Smith Jones”, or some other variation with both names provided rather than “Joe Jones and wife” (a name plus a role).
